WHY DOES MOHAMMED CRY?
THEATRE / PERFORMANCE / PERFORMATIVE SCULPTURE

Lehry recounts that it has been 15 years since he last cried. Through the years, he has been exposed to a great amount of sadness and tragedy and yet has been unable to express his grief through this bodily venting which is crying. Meanwhile, there has been a steady increase in reportage of Islamophobic incidents both at home in India and all around the world. Mosques are vandalised, shootings occur in sacred spaces, homes of muslims are demolished, madressas are burnt. All of this has become regular news. He is filled with grief and yearns to cry but just can’t seem to bring himself to do it. Thus starts the performance, he pulls out his notes from 2010 as a young actor and tries to cry for an audience.

The performance was developed with the support of The Norwegian Theatre Academy and was part of an artistic research project of Lehry between 2022 - 2024.

The performance was first developed at the the Gender Performance and Technology Workshop, Paris and further developed at Body Poetry Festival in Gerlesborg, Sweden.
The show runs for 90 minutes and ends with the audience witnessing lehry trying to weep for 10 minutes.
